Levers, Ramps, and Wheels: Six Machines That Make Work Easy
Imagine trying to push a heavy sofa across a room with just your hands sliding on the bare floor โ almost impossible! But put four small wheels under it, and one person can glide it across easily. Wheels are a simple machine: a clever tool that changes how a force works so we can do a job with much less effort. Engineers who build vehicles, buildings, and toys use simple machines every day.

What Is a Simple Machine?
A simple machine is a device with few or no moving parts that makes a job easier by changing the direction or size of a force. A force is a push or a pull. When you lift a heavy rock, you need a big upward force. A simple machine lets you use a smaller force โ or push in a more convenient direction โ to get the same job done. Scientists identified six classic simple machines hundreds of years ago, and every complex machine (like a bicycle, a car, or a washing machine) is built from combinations of these six.
When a simple machine makes the force smaller, it makes the distance you push longer to balance out. A long ramp needs less pushing force than lifting straight up โ but you travel a longer path. The total work stays the same!
Meet the Six Simple Machines
1. Lever โ A stiff bar that pivots on a point called the fulcrum. Seesaws, bottle openers, and crowbars are levers. Push down on one side and the other side goes up. 2. Wheel and Axle โ A wheel attached to a central rod called the axle. Doorknobs, steering wheels, and rolling pins are wheel-and-axle machines. Turning the big wheel moves the axle with much more force. 3. Pulley โ A wheel with a rope over it. Flagpoles use pulleys โ you pull down and the flag goes up! Pulleys can also be combined to lift very heavy loads. 4. Inclined Plane (Ramp) โ A flat surface set at an angle. It takes less force to slide something up a ramp than to lift it straight up. Slides, wheelchair ramps, and loading ramps are inclined planes. 5. Wedge โ Two inclined planes stuck back-to-back. Knives, axes, and doorstops are wedges. Pressing down makes the two sides push outward, splitting or holding things apart. 6. Screw โ An inclined plane wrapped in a spiral around a cylinder. Jar lids, bolts, and spiral staircases are screws. Turning applies a large squeezing or lifting force.
A pair of scissors is actually two wedges (the blades) AND a lever (the handles pivot on a rivet in the middle). Many everyday tools combine more than one simple machine!

Simple Machines in Your Home
Look around any room and you will find simple machines hiding everywhere: - Faucet handle: wheel and axle (the big handle turns the small valve) - Light switch: lever (flip up = on, flip down = off) - Staircase: inclined plane (a gentler rise than a straight-up ladder) - Zipper teeth: wedge (the slider forces two rows of teeth apart or together) - Lid of a peanut butter jar: screw (twist around and around to come off)

1. Grab a piece of paper and write the six names across the top: Lever, Wheel and Axle, Pulley, Inclined Plane, Wedge, Screw. 2. Walk through your home or schoolroom and find at least ONE real example of each machine. 3. Write or draw each example under the correct name. 4.
