Your Amazing Brain

Your BRAIN is the most amazing organ in your body. It's about the size of two clenched fists, weighs about 3 pounds (1.4 kg), and contains about 86 BILLION neurons — brain cells that talk to each other. Every thought, every feeling, every movement, every memory — all happens in your brain.

What your brain does. CONTROLS your body — heart, breathing, digestion (without you thinking about it). PROCESSES senses — sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch. STORES memories — old ones and new ones. CREATES thoughts and feelings. LEARNS new skills and ideas. DREAMS while you sleep. All this happens at lightning speed, all the time.

How many neurons (brain cells) does your brain have?

Your brain is always growing and changing. When you LEARN something, your neurons make new connections. When you PRACTICE, those connections get stronger. When you SLEEP, your brain organizes the day's memories. Even when you're resting, your brain uses about 20% of your body's energy — more than any other organ.
