Counting Mixed Coins
When you have a handful of mixed coins, the fastest way to count them is to start with the BIGGEST values. A quarter is worth 25 cents. A dime is 10 cents. A nickel is 5 cents. A penny is 1 cent. Counting in this order keeps your math simple.
Try this: 2 quarters + 3 dimes + 1 nickel + 4 pennies. Quarters first: 25, 50. Now dimes: 60, 70, 80. Nickel: 85. Pennies: 86, 87, 88, 89. Total: 89 cents. Counting big-to-small means each step is a comfortable add.
You have 3 quarters and 2 dimes. How much do you have in total?
To make a dollar (100 cents), you can use: 4 quarters, OR 10 dimes, OR 20 nickels, OR 100 pennies, OR many mixed combinations. Knowing several ways to make a dollar helps you check your work and make change.
