Naming Your Feelings So Big Ones Feel Smaller

Have you ever felt so mad your face got hot? Or so happy you wanted to jump? Those are feelings, and everybody has them โ€” even grown-ups, even the president! Here is a secret that real scientists have found: when you can NAME a feeling โ€” say "I feel angry" out loud โ€” the big feeling starts to calm down. Naming it helps your brain take charge.

What You'll Learn

By the end you will be able to: 1. Name four big feelings: happy, sad, angry, and scared. 2. Notice how a feeling shows up in your body. 3. Use one calm-down trick when a feeling gets too big.

Four Big Feelings

There are lots of feelings, but let's start with four big ones: - HAPPY โ€” you smile, you feel light and bouncy. - SAD โ€” you might cry, you feel heavy and slow. - ANGRY โ€” your face gets hot, your hands squeeze tight. - SCARED โ€” your heart beats fast, your tummy feels funny. All of these feelings are okay to have. There are no bad feelings โ€” only big ones and small ones.

Feelings Live in Your Body

Your body gives you clues about how you feel. When you are scared, your heart goes thump-thump fast. When you are angry, your muscles get tight. When you are happy, you feel warm and light. Learning to notice these body clues is like being a feelings detective. The clues tell you what feeling has arrived, even before you say a word.

The Balloon Breath Trick

When a feeling gets too big, try this: breathe in slowly through your nose and pretend you are blowing up a big balloon in your belly. Then let the air out slow. Do it three times. This tells your body it is safe to calm down.

Match each feeling to a body clue.

Make a Feelings Face Chart

Fold a paper into four boxes. In each box, draw a face: happy, sad, angry, and scared. Under each face, write or ask a grown-up to write one time you felt that way. Hang it where you can see it. When a big feeling comes, point to the matching face and say the feeling out loud. Then try three Balloon Breaths.
