Moon Dust: The Tiny Sharp Rocks That Scratch Everything
When astronauts walked on the Moon for the first time in 1969, they came back with a big surprise. The Moon is covered in a thick blanket of dust โ but this dust is not soft like the dirt in your backyard. Moon dust is made of millions of tiny, sharp, broken rocks, and it sticks to everything it touches. This dust is one of the biggest problems for building a home on the Moon!

What Is Moon Dust?
The word scientists use for moon dust is REGOLITH (say it: REH-go-lith). Regolith covers the whole surface of the Moon โ in some places it is as deep as you are tall! On Earth, rocks get tumbled in rivers and rubbed together by wind until they become smooth and round. But the Moon has no rivers or wind. Instead, space rocks called meteorites have been crashing into the Moon for billions of years. Every crash breaks rocks into smaller and smaller pieces, but those pieces stay sharp and jagged โ like broken glass under a microscope. Moon dust is also very clingy because tiny particles get electric charges from sunlight. That is why dust stuck to every single thing the Apollo astronauts touched.
Astronaut Harrison Schmitt sneezed hard during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, sending dust flying around inside the lunar module. He said moon dust smells like burnt gunpowder! Scientists think the fresh, sharp particles react with moisture in the air in ways that Earth rocks never do.
Why Is Moon Dust Dangerous?
Moon dust causes three big problems for space habitat designers. PROBLEM 1 โ It scratches things. The sharp edges grind away at spacesuits, visors, and the solar panels that make electricity. Apollo astronauts found their boots worn thin after just a few moonwalks. PROBLEM 2 โ It clogs machines. Dust gets into every zipper, hinge, and seal. Engineers have to design air-lock doors and equipment that can keep dust OUT. PROBLEM 3 โ It can hurt your lungs. If tiny sharp pieces get inside a habitat and astronauts breathe them in, it could damage their lungs the way coal dust harms miners. Keeping the air clean is very important.
How Scientists Plan to Beat the Dust
Engineers working on Moon habitats have come up with some clever ideas. DUST BOOT ROOM: Just like you might take off muddy boots at the door, astronauts could use a special chamber at the entrance to brush off their suits before going inside. ELECTRIC DUST SHIELDS: Since moon dust has an electric charge, scientists are testing force fields that push dust away from solar panels and windows โ like how two magnets push each other away. SMOOTH SURFACES: Habitats could be coated in very smooth materials that dust cannot grip. TURTLE SHELL DESIGN: One idea buries the habitat under a thick layer of regolith itself โ using the moon dust as a radiation shield. The dust problem actually becomes the solution!
