Meet Golden Rice: A Grain That Fights Blindness
Most rice is white. But scientists made a kind of rice that is GOLD! It is called Golden Rice. The gold color comes from a vitamin hiding inside called beta-carotene. Your body turns beta-carotene into Vitamin A. Carrots have it too, and that is why carrots are orange!

Why Our Eyes Need Vitamin A
Your eyes need Vitamin A to see, especially at night. If a child does not get enough Vitamin A, their eyes can get very sick, and some children can even go blind. In some countries, rice is almost the only food kids eat every day, and plain rice does not have Vitamin A in it.
How Scientists Made Rice Turn Gold
Two scientists, Ingo Potrykus and Peter Beyer, worked for years in the 1990s to solve this problem. They took tiny instructions (genes) from other plants, like corn and a soil microbe, that know how to make beta-carotene. They placed those instructions inside a rice seed. When that seed grew into a rice plant, the rice grains turned gold, packed with the vitamin!
Scientists found that just one cup of cooked Golden Rice can give a child a big part of the Vitamin A they need in a whole day.
From Field to Family Table
Farmers plant Golden Rice seeds just like regular rice seeds. It grows in a rice paddy, gets harvested, and is cooked the exact same way as white rice. Families do not need to change how they cook at all โ they just get extra vitamins hiding inside every spoonful.

Why does Golden Rice look gold instead of white?
What can happen to children who do not get enough Vitamin A?
Look at the vegetables in your kitchen. Orange and yellow ones like carrots, sweet potatoes, and squash usually have lots of beta-carotene too!
Build a Rainbow Vitamin Plate
Draw a plate on paper. Draw or list 5 different colored foods (like a golden banana, orange carrot, red tomato, green spinach, purple grape). Next to each food, write one vitamin or nutrient you think it might give your body. Share your plate with a family member and explain why colorful food helps us stay healthy.
