A doorbell, a microwave, a bike, a tablet โ these are all technology, and every single one of them was designed by someone who asked, "What does this need to do, and how can I build it?" Technology Is More Than Screens
Technology means any tool or invention that people made to solve a problem. A pencil is technology. A bicycle is technology. A can opener is technology. Screens and computers are technology too, but they are just one small part of a much bigger idea that includes wheels, zippers, and even scissors.
Gears: Small Wheels With Teeth That Work Together
Open up an old mechanical clock or a hand-crank pencil sharpener and you'll see gears โ wheels with teeth that lock together. When one gear turns, it turns the gear next to it. Bicycles use gears too: pedaling turns one gear, which pulls a chain, which turns the back wheel gear, making the bike move.
Input and Output: Every Machine's Job
Every piece of technology takes an input (something you give it) and creates an output (something it gives back). When you press a doorbell button, that's the input. The "ding-dong" sound is the output. When you speak into a video call, your voice is the input, and the sound coming out of someone else's speaker far away is the output.
The wheel is considered one of humanity's most important inventions, first used over 5,500 years ago โ and it's still inside almost every machine that moves today, including cars, gears, and even hard drives.

Pick 3 pieces of technology in your home (examples: a toaster, a remote control, a zipper). For each one, draw it and write down its input (what you do to it) and its output (what it does back). Circle which one you think is the cleverest invention and explain why in one sentence.
