Working Together: How to Perform a Group Scene
Picture five actors on a stage, all pretending to be animals at a busy zoo at the exact same moment — a lion pacing, a monkey swinging, a bird flapping, a zookeeper feeding, and a visitor pointing and laughing. If everyone just did their own thing without paying attention to each other, the audience wouldn't know where to look! A group scene only works when every actor plays their own part while also paying close attention to everyone else on stage.

Give Everyone a Job
Before a group scene starts, each actor should know exactly what they are doing — are you the lion, the zookeeper, or a visitor? Everyone needs a clear job so the scene doesn't look messy or confusing to the audience watching.
Watch and Listen
Even when it's not your turn to talk or move, keep your eyes and ears on the other actors. If the lion suddenly roars, the zookeeper should react — jump, turn around, or freeze. Actors who ignore each other make the whole scene feel fake.
Freeze Like a Photograph
A tableau is when every actor freezes in place at the same time, like a living photograph, to show one important moment clearly. Practicing tableaus helps a whole group learn to move and stop together, which makes the ending of a scene feel strong and clear instead of trailing off.
Before your next group scene, count down '3-2-1-freeze!' together so everyone stops on the exact same beat. A clean group freeze gets a bigger reaction from the audience than a messy one.

Zoo Scene Tableau
With 3-5 friends or family members, each pick a zoo animal or zoo worker. Act out the scene for 20 seconds, then freeze into a tableau on the count of '3-2-1-freeze!' Take a photo of your freeze, and each person should name what job they were doing in the scene.
