Thor the Thunder God

CRACK — BOOM! Long ago, when thunder shook the dark Norse sky, Vikings did not reach for a weather app. They knew exactly what was happening: Thor, the mighty son of Odin, was swinging his enormous war hammer across the heavens, smashing frost giants who dared to cause trouble. Thor was one of the most beloved gods in all of Viking mythology — a powerful protector of people, farms, and all of Asgard.

Thor is the god of thunder, storms, and strength in Norse mythology. His father is Odin — the chief of all the gods — and he lives in a great hall called Bilskirnir in Asgard, the realm of the gods. Thor is enormous — the biggest and strongest of all the gods. He has bright red hair and a bushy red beard. Despite his great power, Thor is not mean or frightening. Vikings thought of him as a friend to everyday people like farmers and sailors, while his father Odin was more mysterious and favored warriors and kings. Thor travels across the sky in a chariot pulled by two magical goats named Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr. The rumble of thunder is the sound of his chariot rolling across the clouds, and lightning is the spark from his hammer striking.

Thor's most famous possession is his hammer, Mjolnir (say it: MYOL-neer). It was forged by two dwarf craftsmen called the Sons of Ivaldi in the fiery underground realm of the dwarves. Mjolnir is one of the most powerful weapons ever made — it can smash through mountains and send bolts of lightning crashing down. Here is something special: after Thor throws Mjolnir, it always flies back to his hand like a boomerang. Nobody else can lift it because of a magical enchantment — only Thor (and those he deems truly worthy) can pick it up. Mjolnir has one funny flaw: its handle is very short! This happened because a fly bit the dwarf forge master at exactly the wrong moment during the smithing. He jerked his hand and the handle came out stubby. But Thor loves his hammer just the same.

One of Thor's most amazing adventures is his fishing trip with the giant Hymir. Instead of normal bait, Thor used a whole ox head on his hook! He actually caught Jormungandr — the World Serpent — a snake so enormous it wraps around the entire earth and bites its own tail. Thor nearly pulled it out of the water, but Hymir panicked and cut the fishing line. The battle between Thor and Jormungandr would be saved for the end of the world, called Ragnarok. In another funny story, someone stole Mjolnir! A frost giant named Thrym took it and refused to give it back unless the gods sent him the beautiful goddess Freyja as a bride. The gods refused — but they had an idea. Thor disguised himself as a bride wearing a dress and veil, with the trickster god Loki dressed as his bridesmaid. At the wedding feast, when Thrym brought out Mjolnir to bless the 'bride,' Thor grabbed it and defeated every giant in the hall. Vikings loved telling this story and laughing at the mighty thunder god in a wedding dress!
