The First Farmers: How People Learned to Grow Food

A long, long time ago, before there were any stores, people had to walk far to find berries, nuts, and plants to eat. If a place ran out of food, the whole family packed up and moved somewhere new. Then people noticed something amazing. When a seed fell on the ground, a new plant grew! So they started planting seeds on purpose. That was the very first farming, and it changed the world.

What You'll Learn

- Where people got food before farms - How planting seeds let families stay in one place - Why the first farms let towns grow - One food we still eat today that early farmers grew

Following the Food

Before farms, people were called hunter-gatherers. They HUNTED animals for meat and GATHERED plants they found. They walked to wherever the food was. That meant a lot of moving. When the berries were gone, the family had to leave. It was hard to carry babies and blankets to a new home over and over.

A Long Time Ago

The first farms started about 12,000 years ago in a warm, green place we now call the Middle East. That is way, way before your great-great-grandparents were born!

The Seed Surprise

One day someone dropped some wheat seeds near their camp. Weeks later, tall wheat plants grew right there. People thought: 'What if we plant seeds where WE want them?' So they poked seeds into the dirt, gave them water, and waited. Green plants popped up. Now people could grow food close to home instead of walking far to look for it.

Farms Make Towns

Once people could grow food in one spot, they did not have to move anymore. They built houses that stayed put. More families moved close together, and small villages grew into towns. Early farmers grew wheat, barley, peas, and lentils. They also kept sheep and goats for milk and wool. Some of those same foods are in your kitchen today!

Grow Your Own Seed

Put a dry bean on a wet paper towel inside a clear cup or bag. Set it near a sunny window and keep the towel damp. Each day, draw a picture of what you see. After about a week, a tiny root and green sprout will appear, just like the first farmers watched their seeds grow! Show your drawings to a grown-up and tell them how a seed becomes a plant.
