Baby Animals and Their Parents
Every animal was once a BABY. But different animals are raised in VERY different ways. Some animal parents stay with their babies for years, teaching and protecting them. Others lay eggs and leave them to hatch and survive on their own. Both can work — depending on the animal.
Parenting styles. MAMMALS feed milk and care for babies (sometimes years). BIRDS sit on eggs, feed chicks, then teach flying. REPTILES often lay eggs and leave (turtles); some (alligators) guard nests. AMPHIBIANS like frogs typically lay eggs and leave. FISH usually lay thousands of eggs and let nature take its course. SOCIAL INSECTS (bees, ants) raise young in big colonies. There are over 1,000 ways to raise babies, and each is suited to that species' life.
A sea turtle lays 100 eggs in beach sand and swims away forever. Most baby turtles get eaten before reaching the water. Why does this strategy WORK?
Some surprising parents. EMPEROR PENGUINS — the dad sits on the egg through Antarctic winter while mom is away. SEAHORSES — the dad gets pregnant! OCTOPUS moms often die after their eggs hatch — they stop eating to guard them. CUCKOOS lay eggs in OTHER birds' nests, tricking the foster parents. BEES — the queen lays all the eggs; sister workers raise them. The diversity of parenting in nature is breathtaking.

Pick 3 different animals (a mammal, a bird, an insect or fish). For each, look up how they raise their young. How many babies? How long do parents stay? What do parents teach? You'll see how varied parenting can be.
Animal parenting shows that LIFE has many strategies. Each species has its own way. None is universally better — they all work for their world.
